Introduction

Tiffany Portrait

Welcome to my website, I am Tiffany Hickenlooper. People describe me as an extrovert with a bubbly personality. I'm married to Jared and we have two wonderful boys. My husband and I enjoy the outdoors. We love to fish, camp, rock climb and hike. Our boys enjoy the parks, mountains, sledding, the zoo, and swimming.

My belief about birth is that a woman has the right to make choices that work best for her. Giving birth to my own children was a life changing event, I was thankful to have my husband as sole support. I chose to become a doula to educate women about their options and aid in making their birth experience a positive event. Trusting a woman's intuition and allowing their choices of where and how to give birth should be encouraged and embraced. I'd love to hear from you, please visit the "contact me" page.

What is a doula?

"Doula" is a Greek word referring to an experienced woman who helps other women. The word has now come to mean a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during, and after childbirth. --Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, Mothering the Mother, 1993

A common misconception is that midwives and doulas offer the same services. Midwives and doulas do differ as midwives are the ones who offer medical support.

Doula statistics

Studies have shown that the presence of a doula improves birth in the following ways:

  • 50% reduction in cesarean birth
  • 30% reduction in requests for pain medication
  • 60% fewer requests for epidural anesthesia
  • 25% decrease in the length of labor
  • Lower post partum rate for mothers
  • Increased breast feeding success
  • Greater overall satisfaction from the mother about her birth
